The Phillies went into this week only a game out of first with the Mets playing the strong Brewers and the Phils playing the hapless Nats. It didn't quite go as planned as the Phils went 1-2 and the Mets went 3-0. Making it a 3 game lead for the Mets. The last shining ray of hope is that we get play them for 3 games this weekend.
Mano e mano (Nine-o e Nine-o?)
If we can manage a sweep or even pick up a game by winning 2 of 3 then I'll send in my playoff invoice this coming week. If they lose the first 2, well, then at least it's football season! The Iggles play the Rams in the home opener. Quite frankly, I just don't know what to expect. I hear that they could be good this year, but you hear that every year and while they do contend almost every year, I'd really like to see a real strong team that makes the Superbowl.
Dammit- is that too much to ask- a friggin' championship?
It's been too goddamned long and I'm sick of it. I couldn't give a rat's ass that the stupid Soul won a title. I want a Superbowl ring or a World Series ring and I want it this year.
In the words of the esteemed Tim Gunn, "Make it work!"

Phils win in a big comeback, no thanks to Blanton
The Phils could hardly muster but 2 runs against Mets staff ace Johan Santana tonight. Blanton didn't pitch all that well (surprise, surprise) in his debut for the Phillies as he let up 5 runs in 6innings. Although I still contend that we will regret this trade for years, it was great to see a magnificent comeback 9th inning win.
Down by 5-2 and no Billy Wagner available for the Mets to close out the game, the Phillies had the following players go on base without making an out-
Werth
Dobbs
Victorino
Ruiz
Taguchi
Rollins
Not the players you'd expect to mount a huge comeback as there wasn't any real power hitters in there. The biggest hit was a bases loaded double that came off the bat of Mr. Awful this year himself, So Taguchi.
When the inning finally ended they were up by 8-5. Lidge successfully closed it out and the Phils won 8-6.
This was one of those games that you look back on as one the top 3 or 4 games of the year that make you look back and smile big. Whenever you beat your divisional rival in an unlikely come from behind win to take sole possession of 1st place, I think it becomes one of those moments where you're overcome with wonderful feelings of being a baseball fan.
Thanks So, I'm sorry I bad mouthed you so many times this year. I'm sure come the next game I'll be bad mouthing you again, but you were key tonight. Let's pull for 2 more big wins!!!

Should we be scared of the boogey man?

The Mets acquisition of Johan Satana is a big blow, but will it spell doom for the Phillies?
The bad news-
He's the best pitcher currently in the majors and it will create at least an additional 5-6 wins for the Mets.
If Pedro is healthy, then the Mets have the best rotation in baseball.
The good news-
The Phillies still have the best offense in the National league.
Despite the anemic off-season, we still pick up some wins by moving Myers to the rotation.
The Mets will eventually regret the contract as Johan will decline or get injured.
The Mets and Phils are pretty evenly matched this year- it will be a classic battle of offense vs defense. Should be fun. Here's hoping for a repeat division title and more!

Santana to the Mets would suck
According to the Star Tribune the Mets are close to a deal with the Twins to get Johan Santana. Basically, they would trade their 2 best prospects and a few B grade prospects and then sign Santana to a 6 year 120 million dollar deal. If I were the Mets I'd do the deal in a heart beat. Unfortunately, I don't think the Phils could match the deal, let alone pay Santana that kind of scratch. It would really, really suck if this deal were to come to fruition. It really makes the Mets a much better team on paper than it is currently and probably makes them better than the Phillies. Currently the Mets pitching is better than the Phils, but the Phils' better offense compensates for it, Santana would be too much of a pitching upgrade to overcome.
Cross your fingers Phillies phaithful!
